Cash in lieu of health insurance for Adrian Township officials questioned

Six of the seven members of the Adrian Township Board receive extra compensation for forgoing township-provided health insurance while the seventh has insurance from the township. Township resident Chloann Smith has publicly questioned the cash payments, known as compensation in lieu of health insurance. Adrian Township Supervisor Jim Koehn has defended the township?s policy on board member health insurance, saying he and other board members there are paid less than their counterparts in other townships. The township spends just under $24,000 a year on the extra compensation and insurance for board members. A Daily Telegram survey of seven other townships in Lenawee, Jackson and Monroe counties with similar populations to Adrian Township found that only one of the townships other than Adrian compensates board members who don?t take insurance.
